Empowering leadership for a brighter future

In today's ever-changing landscape, cultivating strong leadership has never been more critical, particularly in children's services. Effective leadership in this area can profoundly impact the lives and futures of the younger generation. The south west region is embarking on a strategic initiative to enhance leadership succession in the region through collaboration with The Staff College. This partnership has created robust leadership development programmes that have established a solid foundation for nurturing the next generation of leaders. It also includes development sessions for existing director of children's services.

Our collaboration with The Staff College is a pivotal step in our commitment to leadership development. This enables us to offer comprehensive, tailored leadership support that addresses the unique challenges and requirements of our region's leadership landscape. The Staff College state:

“The ongoing relationship between the South West region and The Staff College is one we value. Succession planning and support is critically important for the sector, and it has been positive to see the region proactively respond to this. It is a pleasure to work with them to look at the support their DCSs in role need and to think about how they cultivate their leaders of the future.” (Jane Parfrement, CEO The Staff College)

Central to this sector-led improvement initiative is the outcomes for children. By fostering strong, capable leadership we aim to create environments where children can thrive and ensure that children's services in the region are responsive and effective. Our efforts are designed to equip leaders with the skills and vision needed to navigate the complexities of their roles and make a tangible difference in children's lives.

One of the most critical aspects of our program is its focus on supporting the role of director of children's services. This role carries immense responsibility, and our leadership development efforts are tailored to prepare individuals for the challenges and opportunities it presents. By fostering a pipeline of qualified, capable leaders, we ensure the continuity and effectiveness of leadership in this vital area, ultimately leading to better outcomes for children in the region.

As our longstanding regional chair, Lucy Townsend, transitions to a chief executive role, I will step into the role of chair. Lucy gave the following comment:

“I have loved being a DCS and working with colleagues across the southwest and nationally to improve the lives of our most vulnerable children. I will be taking everything I have learnt into my new role and will continue to champion children whenever I can.” (Lucy Townsend, CEO Wiltshire Council)

My regional colleagues and I thank Lucy for her hard work and commitment and wish her well for the future. Her legacy is a region with continuity of leadership and a focus on sector-led improvements that ensures commitment to enhancing outcomes for children remains unwavering.

Through our leadership offer and commitment to sector-led improvements, we are creating a strong foundation for leadership succession and success in the region. By supporting the role of director of children's services and facilitating seamless leadership transitions, we are poised to continue making a positive impact on children's services and the broader landscape. Furthermore, the region’s thriving alumni network underscores the success of our efforts, ensuring that the region is well-equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
