About the Programme

The Local Government Apprentice Toolkit is a tailored development programme designed to give apprentices a strong grounding in how local government works, while building the confidence, skills, and mindset needed for long-term career success.

Recognising that apprenticeships span Levels 2 to 7, the programme is flexible and can be adapted to suit different levels and organisational needs.

This series complements formal qualifications by offering practical, real-world insights into the unique environment of local government, enhancing the learning experience and helping apprentices connect their training to the realities of public service.

Why This Programme

We’re confident this programme will make a real difference to your apprentices and will help improve their effectiveness in their local government careers. They will network with colleagues, gain a greater context of the essentials in local government, and will become stronger assets for your organisation. They will be inspired, and will inspire each other, as we help to unlock their potential, helping them on their personal development journeys.

We help develop apprentices not just as local government employees, but as human beings. Helping them on their journey to achieve their potential and help the council deliver for its residents. 

We see ourselves as an additional support to OD teams, providing tailored support to apprentices. Acting as a wrap around we ensure development areas are nurtured as part of organisational apprenticeship programs

Political Awareness

(90 minutes) – Working with elected members, with real-world case studies. 

Helping apprentices connect their development to real experiences within local government.

Personal Brand & Impact

(90 minutes) – Defining your USP and ethos. Communicating with impact, networking and taking charge of your career.

Leadership & Teamwork

(90 minutes)  - recognising outstanding leaders and how to learn from them. Navigating change and playing your part in team cohesion. Being an ally - playing your role in creating an inclusive work environment.

Customer Focus

(60 minutes) - Who are our customers, their touchpoints and how we can meet their needs. The importance of effective communication & engagement.

Wellbeing & Resilience

 (60 or 90 mins) (Beth), Managing stress, optimising resilience and embedding wellbeing.

Local Government Essentials

(60 mins) – Essentials in different roles and responsibilities in the local government sector - who does what and the difference between statutory and discretionary services. Understanding the basics - budget, HR, procurement, audit, legal etc.

Welcome & Foundations

(90 mins) - backgrounds, establishing a baseline, career aspirations, personal journeys. Why a career in local government?
